No big problems

I was just on an overnight, and since my wife and I are planning on staying at the Suites in a month or so, I thought I would check this out.

Overall, good for the price.

The subway is close.

Clean, but not polished.

The people seem nice.

The shower is a bit small for a big guy like me.

The A/C units blows right on the bed.

Ask for a second floor room so you don't have to climb up to the third floor.

If you are just there to sleep and save some money, this is for you.

I toured the suites too and they look really nice.

I would recomend.

A Great Experience

After my last trip where I stayed in a real cheap (and hence crappy) hotel, I made a conscious choice to pay a little more to get better accommodation. Chelsea Lodge is located in the Chelsea area and if you are not a serial homophobic you will love the hotel's proximity to the Subway station (23rd St) and a multitude of conveniently located restaurants and stores. The hotel itself has no signage, so make sure you have the exact address. Inside the hotel is decked from floot to ceiling with wood-themed wallpaper and artifacts (hence the name "lodge") The room was small but very clean and comfortable. The bed had Hershey kisses on the pillows which I felt was a nice touch. Although the toilets are shared, the room has an in-room shower cubicle. The conservative should note that this shower cubicle uses a translucent door. There is cable TV facilities and simple wardrobe units to keep tidy. My stay at this hotel was one of the major reasons my New York holiday was memorable and a pleasure. No more cheap crappy hotels for me!

Loved the price & loaction

We stayed at the Chelsea lodge this year foor 8 nights in June. I had already read some reviews of the place prior to arrival, and I was not disappointed. It was cosy and clean and the staff was most helpful.

If you are looking for a place to stay, which is central and close to Soho, Tribeca and Greenwich Village you MUST stay here.

The street is a typical NY street with brownstones, and you actually don't feel like you're in a hotel, but it makes you feel like you are entering your own appartment.

Great value!

MY Favourite NY Hotel

The Chelsea Lodge offers all I want from a hotel: a comfortable bed, friendly and helpful staff, great location. The rooms are small, but you don't come to New York to sit around in your hotel room. It's perfectly placed- ie within walking distance of the Village Vanguard- and in an interesting and safe neighbourhood. I've stayed there twice, and will certainly do so again.

Small and clean

My boyfriend and I were in NYC for four nights (march 21-24 2004) and chose to stay at the chelsea lodge because it had some privacy for a cheap (by new york standards) price. The hotel was very clean (almost too clean with the noxious chemical scent in the bathroom), and the shower in the room was incredibly tiny. We had the cheapest room in the place. The heat was pretty high, but the blankets weren't very heavy so it was fine. Both of us would definitly stay here again. Fun neighborhood that is close to subway stops on all sides. We took the train, and it's only nine blocks to the train stations. Overall, not bad!

Feel like a New Yorker

I was excited to get a great deal in a nice "feel like home" hotel. I thought it was a great deal for $105 a night. Good service and the room was clean. It gave me an opportunity to get the real New York experience. American travelers are way to picky and anal in having it their way. If you're adventurous and want a good deal, stay here. (by the way, no elevators, so the the walk up give you exercise.)

Somewhat disappointed

Looking for economical lodging with character, I was excited to see the glorious reviews of The Chelsea Lodge and booked a single night the week of 21 March. Yes the location was wonderful, staff nice and the hotel has a classic early 19th century facade. I stayed in one of the "newly renovated" rooms that was offered as "deluxe" because it has a full bath. The room was unbearably hot, as steam radiator pipes run across the ceiling and up the bathroom wall. These basement rooms must be torture in the colder winter months. There was almost no sound protection from the adjoining room, and the decor was something of modified el cheapo cutesy country, with white-painted used funiture and very cheap reproduction Currier and Ives prints tacked to the walls. It seems liked lodging options are very limited in the Chelsea/ West Village area, but I will keep looking, even if it means paying more.

Like Having Your own Apartment

Lovely Location, room are small but immaculate. As there is no 'outward' marking on the Lodge stating it is a hotel, it's like having your own New York Apartment.

Have friends/visitors call ahead to your cell phone if meeting you in the evening so you can greet at the front door...as the door will be locked....

Only phone at the smaller lodge is one pay phone in the lobby - no phones in room.

You cannot beat the price !!

Wonderfully small

My wife and I recently stayed at the Chelsea Lodge for 5 nights. It is a great hotel. The rooms are small (the shower and sink are in the same room as your bed and dressers) but they are very nice. The daily maid service is great and having to share a toilet is no problem. I never had to wait to use it. Considering the cost and the location of the hotel, I would be suprised to find a better hotel in New York. You are just a few blocks from 3 different subway lines. The staff is great as well. Do yourself a favor and stay at this charming hotel.

A New York Gem

We just returned from a 7 night stay at the lovely Chelsea Lodge. It's quaint, spotlessly clean, in a great neighbourhood, and affordable at $100 a night. We'll recommend it to all our friends and stay there whenever we're in New York. The only negatives (and I'm stretching to find any) are that it has no restaurant (but there's a lovely French cafe around the corner on 9th - Le Gamin Cafe), it's a three storey walkup (though there are several ground floor rooms available), and I really can't think of any other drawbacks. Like Frommer's says, the place is a gem.
